Ms. Shannon shares with us some insight on transformations …
I’ve seen this several times in private service, especially when I worked at the Starkey Institute. During their 8-week program, people from all different backgrounds worked towards becoming Household Managers. It’s not an easy transition. At some point in the course, it seemed like every student hit their wall – were they going to make the transition? Or was the leap too great?
When they began to really see themselves as Household Managers – not students, not job seekers, not former business owners – but a real HM’s, ready to serve their principals with honor and respect, that was when we knew they were going to make it in this demanding industry.
Sometimes the transformation took place after graduation. One graduate that we placed didn’t acheive her new HM job until several months after finishing the course. But the most impressive thing about her was the changes I saw at every stage. She was more polished at each interview. Her confidence increased after taking a housekeeping supervisors position, even though it looked like a step back. But she never gave up – and with each challenge, she believed in herself more.
It was a beautiful thing to watch, especially when we placed her in a Household Management position that was a near perfect match.
If you’re struggling with a career transformation yourself, keep at it. Believe that you can be what you strive to achieve. Fill in the necessary skills if need be. Use each setback as a chance to learn.
And be ready to soar when the right job presents itself.
