introduction by Alice Shaffer
This past weekend I was in Tampa for the 26th Annual International Nanny Association Conference, it was filled with wonderful attendees in the industry. Several of the nannies have teenagers that they are “nannying” we were discussing cash and credit cards use with the kids. One of the nannies, shared that her bosses use the American Express Pass with the kids.
The American Express Pass is a “credit card” for kids that is preloaded from your American Express, checking or savings account.
While we were discussing this I remembered that my friend Lolli over at Better in Bulk did a write up for the American Express Pass a month or so ago. She is the mother of FIVE and is starting to use this with one of her kids. Read Lolli’s review from a mother’s point of view and don’t forget there is a special offer of getting $25 added to your account from SheSpeaks towards the end of her review. What a great deal-$25 for trying something out. You can even open an account up for yourself! I am off to open one up for myself. This will be a great thing to use for conference money so you don’t overspend too!
Every time I turn around, KitKat needs some money for lunch with friends, a movie, a trip to the mall, a new pair of jeans, etc. KitKat is 14, a freshman in high school, and does not have a job, though she’s working on that. She babysits for me all the time, but rarely gets asked to babysit for other families (it seems to be a trend in this area. We’ll blame it on the economy). She needs money, but I don’t always have cash to give her.

Special Deal via SheSpeaks
like to try the PASS card out for yourself, PASS and SheSpeaks have an offer that’s hard to pass up. Open up a new account with PASS, load $25 onto the new card, and SheSpeaks will load an additional $25 onto the card for you. All you have to do is enter the promotional code SS25 when you open the new account here. The best part of this is the fact that this is not a giveaway… Every one of you is a winner. That’s $25 of free money. Don’t have a teen? Get a card for yourself.
Another American Express PASS article:
Now that I have a teen and a pre-teen, I’ve noticed that their need to “borrow money” is more frequent and the amounts are higher than they were when they wanted to take a trip to the dollar store. I’ve been thinking about the credit card my parents got for me when I was a teen in high school, getting ready to leave for college soon (it was connected to their account). I’ll be forever grateful for the credit training that they gave me while I was still at home and while the stakes were not high.

How does your nanny household deal with the kids and money?
Great article. I looked into prepaid cards, including Pass, and ultimately decided against it. Instead I opened up a MONEY account for my teen with ING Direct. No fees or minimums whatsoever. Also think it’s great that they’re making financial aspects cool for teens with a Facebook page and sweepstakes.
