I’ve been really excited to launch this new series on Regarding Nannies. Kids in the Kitchen will be a fun, interactive way to get kids involved in cooking and baking, as well as learning to help, cooperate and utilize learning styles and our senses.
For kids of any age, it’s important to know your way around the kitchen, know what to make with what you have in your pantry and share with others.
I grew up the daughter of a baker. I spent many times at the bakery with my dad, learning how to roll the buns, frost the cookies, make the dough, decorate a cake and so much more. My grandmothers enhanced that love of being in the kitchen. One grandma loved to bake and I treasure the memories of her cookies and bars, and the other loved to cook – beef stroganoff and split pea soup were my favorites. Funny story about baking grandma …. She was known for her German chocolate cake. Everyone loved this cake and it was a request for many events. As an adult, I was Nannying for a family, and the mom’s favorite cake was GCC. I phoned my grandma asking her for the recipe so the child and I could make as a surprise for mom. Grandma didn’t hesitate to share with me her recipe … Betty Crocker! I was shocked. All these years of picturing her slaving away creating this cake from scratch to find it was from a box.
So any great chef needs to surround themselves with the tools to help them be successful in their creations. I found this great site that helps you gather all the tools and equipment you’ll need to be a master chef.
Your first recipe comes from Beyond Peanut Butter and Jelly – Cooking with the International Nanny Association.
Fudge Pops
1 (4 ounce) package chocolate pudding and pie filling mix
3 cups milk
¼ cup sugar
½ cup whipping cream, whipped
Combine the pudding mix, mile and sugar in a saucepan and mix well. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Let cool for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Fold in the whipped cream. Pour into small paper cups or Popsicle molds. Freeze until partially frozen and insert wooden sticks or plastic spoons in the center of each pop. Freeze for 3-4 hours or until firm.
Good luck with your creations, and share with us a photo of your Kids in the Kitchen and their master creations.
