It’s Back to School time, and for many that means bringing your lunch to school. I remember going shopping to find the ultimate lunch box to carry me through the year. Metal ones, princess or action figure, ones with thermos (who brings soup to school)? The options are endless these days! You can’t be there to make sure the kids eat what you prepare, or know if they are throwing it away or trading with friends for something better. Here are some easy ways to get kids in the kitchen, involved in their lunch routine and relax knowing you’ve done your best in providing healthy and appealing lunches for your kids.
Find recipes children can prepare.
Get a cookbook, take a kid cooking class or peruse magazines for kids and family. The Disney Magazine, Parent and things like American Girl, Teen and Boy’s Life all invite kids to participate in making food happen. Oklahoma City’s MetroFamily has good ideas, and often features local produce. The frequency of cooking shows increases the child’s possible interest in a wider variety of foods, and shows steps and stages to some degree in creating desired foods. Foods that can serve for more than one meal and don’t need to be reheated can show off a child’s skills to peers at the lunch table the next day.
