In the spirit of giving back, we bring you the story of how Michigan nannies came together and continue to provide for area foster kids.
Founder Amber Donaue share her story of how Nanny Outreach began.
For several years, I have been adopting families for Christmas, but last year I thought it might be fun to ask some friends to help me and not just any friends, specifically my nanny friends. I easily convinced 5 local nannies to agree to help out and together we were able to purchase clothing, toys, winter coats, and gift cards for groceries for three woman and their children who were either residing in, or had just left a shelter for battered women. I was very impressed by the groups ability to quickly find people to donate money to the cause and how willing they were to give up some of their own hard earned money for the cause. This year I decided to open it up to all the nannies in two local nanny groups, Michigan Professional Nannies, and Detroit Metro Nannies and the response was amazing. Together we have adopted a total of 12 local foster kids, providing them with everything from socks to the Xbox 360 they have been dreaming about for years. Since the response was so great I decided it was time to give our group a name and with fellow nannies as a sounding board I decided to call the group Nanny Outreach. Nanny Outreach is based on 2 ideas 1) Nannies LOVE children and hold a special place for them in their hearts and 2) Nannies have close to connections to people with resources (ie our employers) and putting the two things together seemed like a no brainer. Because the response has been so great for Christmas donations we hope to become a non-profit in the New Year and raise funds back-to-school supplies and clothes, birthday packages, and anything else we think we can do to help children in need. We are still not only taking donations for Christmas, but also for our future projects. If you would like to donate we have a paypal account at nannyoutreach@gmail.com.
That is wonderful! I love hearing about nannies pulling together to do good things!
Not only are needy people helped, but nannies are shown to the public to be open-hearted doers rather than “sitters”.
