As nannies, we are there to help guide the children we nanny through educational and developmental learning. I recently found this awesome website called Playing with words 365, which is run by Katie who is a licensed pediatric speech language pathologist (SLP). Make sure you check out what the blog is all about and why Katie does what she does. I really love her philosophy on how kids learn through play and having fun. This is a quality I use in my personal nannying skills with my nanny families.
I had a child once who had trouble with saying her “s” sounds and her SLP suggested using a handheld mirror so she could watch herself make the “S” sound in snake and other words. We used that mirror in the car all the time. We had fun with it and I would use the rear view mirror at red lights to practice too with her in the backseat.
Katie shares several tips on how to pick toys for your child(ren) for the developmental levels and growth as well as expanding what they know today. She has gathered items into a few categories with several links to the items. I have shared the 3 categories and only one link for each of them.
