Years in business? 27
What does your company do? We place nannies and household support positions.
Member of what organizations? APNA, INA, BBB, Ballard Chamber of Commerce
What is one of your favorite memories since you have been in business? I don’t have one particular memory, but the satisfaction when making the right match between a family and nanny, and hearing how happy both parties are is extremely gratifying.
What is one item that you would like applicants to pay more attention to when applying for jobs? Listen to your intuition! If you don’t want to work with parents at home, don’t take a job like that because you are desperate for a job. A good agency would not push you into a job you said you didn’t want!
What is the number one mistake nannies make when interviewing? Complaining or gossiping negatively about past employers. This is a major turn off for families and also agencies. We certainly want to hear about your experiences, and if they were negative that is ok, but there is a positive way to convey that information.
What advice would you give to someone considering opening a nanny placement service? Seriously consider the competition in your market. Many markets are very saturated, and new agencies don’t tend to survive. Make sure you offer something different and don’t talk negatively about your competition as the reason you opened your agency. Get involved with INA and APNA right away to learn about industry standards and best practices.
What changes would you like to see in the nanny industry? More of a distinction drawn between full service agencies, and online listing services like Care.com. There is a big difference between the two, and many nannies and families don’t realize there is.
What was your first job? I worked as a cashier at a water slide park when I was 14.
How do you give back in your community? personal or professional. Annie’s Nannies supports many local charities through donations and giving of our time and our nannies time. We donate to local schools, community and senior centers auctions and fundraisers.
After you retire, what would you like to be doing? Retire? Ha! Hopefully enjoying time with my family and traveling.
