Tell us a little bit about how you got into this business?
I have been a certified professional nanny for more than 15 years and LOVE it. About 6 years ago the family I had taken care of for 8 years moved to Costa Rica. I was at a crossroads in my life. In the 9 years I had been a nanny I had been able to help many families I knew work through difficult behavioral or developmental issues with their children. I figured there had to be a way to do that for a living. So I embarked on this new journey that took me 3 years to figure out how to make it happen. In 2010 I graduated from the Academy of Coaching Parents International and opened Strong Roots Family Coaching.
What is one of your favorite memories since you have been in business?
I absolutely LOVE hearing and seeing the reaction of parents when I help them discover the REASON their child is acting in certain ways. Whether it is in a workshop I am teaching, over the phone or in person the joy that it gives mom’s, dad’s and other caregivers to understand their children a little bit more is priceless. It is why I do what I do. At the end of the day, I know that I have helped a child by teaching his or her parents. That puts a smile on my face.
What is the most important piece of advice you can share with our readers?
Children need consistent and loving connection!! There is one piece of advice that I have given to EVERY parent I have worked with. Spend 15 minutes with each of your children alone EVERYDAY. It will make the world of difference.
What was your first job?
I took over my brother’s paper route when I was 9 years old. My first child care related job where I made money was babysitting for my Sunday school teacher when I was 10. Man was I excited to get that call for my first babysitting gig. I was so happy, I almost accidentally hung up on the mom when she asked me to babysit.
When you aren’t working, what do you enjoy?
When I am not working – HA. When I am not working I am spending time with my daughter and husband. We are very active in our local church and very close to our families. Going to the park, out to meals, taking walks and playing at home top my favorite things to do these days. I also like to scrapbook when I can find a day here and there.
How do you give back in your community?
I was an “big” for Big Brothers and Big Sisters for 5 years, I work with my church on local community projects and my husband and I are about to become foster parents for the 2nd time.
After you retire, what would you like to be doing?
If I am anything like my father, I will never stop working. But I plan to find a place with my husband close to a large body of water west of us. I want to be able to see the sunset over the “ocean” every day. I think if I could manage that, I would be a very content and happy person.
Tell us a fun fact about you.
In 2005, just after I met my husband, I traveled to Costa Rica to visit the boys I had spent 8 years helping to raise. Scott and I met 8 weeks before I left on that trip. I was gone for 3 weeks. He proposed to me at the airport when I came home. We had known each other for less than 3 months but I said YES and it was the best decision I ever made. We were married 1 year almost to the day that we met.
What’s your favorite book that you’ve ever read?
I don’t know if I can answer that question. So many books I have read have changed my life. But the series I continually come back to are the “Chronicles of Narnia”. My mother read them to me when I was very little – around 6 or 7 – and they have been with me ever since. Every time I read them I find more insight and spiritual enrichment. They are all amazing with little nuggets hidden inside, but my favorite is probably “The Last Battle”, it brings tears to my eyes every time I read it.
Where would you take your dream vacation?
I would love to travel anywhere. I don’t get to much these days. I have always wanted to take a really LONG trip through Europe, stopping and “living” in places for a while. Really get to know the different cultures, the history of each country and soak in the “spirit” of the place.
If you didn’t have your current business, what would you be doing?
Well, I am a full time nanny and a mother so I would doing that. But I would most likely still be helping parents understand their children through connection. I would just be doing it for free.
