When teaching a young child how to read, the most important thing to do is give them a strong foundation on which they can grow from. Sight words are those building blocks that a child needs in order to become a fluent reader. The importance of sight words cannot be underestimated, because they help children develop self-confidence, which is crucial for a lifelong love of reading.
Sight words are words that a child learns to recognize at a glance. Once they’ve learned a sight word, they can identify it as soon as they see it, without having to break it down and sound it out. This allows them to read quickly and put all their concentration on learning new words to expand their vocabulary even further. The sight words include the most commonly used words, as well as phonetically irregular words (such as “been”), which help a child to recognize other non-phonetic and oddly spelled words.
There are two main lists of sight words: 220 Dolch sight words and 1,000 Fry sight words. When a child learns the Dolch sight words, they will be able to recognize instantly 80% of the words in a children’s book and 50% of the words in a newspaper. With knowledge of all the Fry words, a child can read approximately 90% of any work.
On SightWords.com, you can print grade-specific flashcards for more than 500 sight words. There are also detailed instructions on how to teach your child the words through repetition using the flashcards and fun games. There are 10 learning games and generators to make customized Bingo cards, game boards, card sets, and more. There’s also a detailed tutorial on correction techniques.
When you want to teach your child how to read, sight words are the natural places to begin. With sight words, your child will have the knowledge and confidence to become a fast, fluent reader.
