Your resume is outstanding, your portfolio shows a clear and positive picture of you, your references are glowing, and you have your interview technique down to a science. There’s one item that could send your information into the File 13 section before a family has a chance to see how incredible you are as a Professional Nanny. What is it? Your email address! Your email address is mostly likely one of the first things a family sees. An unprofessional email address could turn a potential family off before even viewing your materials.
You may think this is an exaggeration, but, believe me; Nannies have used email addresses that would make you shutter….or giggle. Would a family consider you with an email address like longtanlegs(at)youremail.com? The chances are unlikely. Save that email address for when you apply for your swimwear modeling gig! SexyNanny(at)youremail.com would, in most cases, not be favored by Mom Boss and be sent quickly to the trash bin. What about ilovecupcakes(at)youremail.com ? While I agree, cupcakes are a favorite treat; it doesn’t show your professionalism unless you are applying for a job in a bakery. Bikerchick(at)youremail.com may show what you like to do in your free time but it is hardly considered appropriate to get your foot in the door to the Nanny position you desire. We all love to express ourselves through an email address that has spark and flare. There IS a place for such expressive email address and they are typically kept for friends and family who know you well.
A professional email address could be as simple as your name such as jane.doe(at)youremail.com or nannyjane(at)youremail.com. If you are like me, and still want more flavor than that you could go with an email that reflects your Nanny style such as teachingnanny(at)youremail.com or careernanny(at)youremail.com. Many Nannies like to reference the part of the country they like to work in such as firstname.lastname@example.org or westcoastnanny(at)youremail.com. What is your unique niche in the Nanny world?
Here’s your time to express it clearly! Both tempnanny(at)youremail.com or multiplesnanny(at)youremail.com would be suitable.
Take time to think about the email address you are currently using with your current family or those you are corresponding with for possible employment. What email address are you using with agencies and other Nanny professionals? Is it Professional or could it be giving the wrong signal?
