There are a lot of great posts that will tell you what to consider when asking for a raise, however I think it may be helpful to add my own personal experiences that go beyond the advice currently out there. When both nannies and employers don’t feel prepared or they aren’t in the right state of mind, conversations about pay can be tense, awkward, and even leave someone feeling resentful after the conversation. As a nanny, I’ve encountered situations where parents felt caught off guard or unsure of how to respond when a raise was brought up in conversation. On other occasions, I have been my own worst enemy by making assumptions about how the conversation with my nanny family would go or by talking myself out of opportunities.
But there’s hope!
